Charging into the future
Helping drivers go electric
Electric travel is the future.
The UK is planning to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. It’s part of a drive to reduce carbon emissions and clean up the air we all breathe.
It’s a big change for drivers – and we’re here to help.
If you need to drive in Greater Manchester, we want you to have the confidence to go electric knowing you can easily charge on the go.
Our commitment to electric travel is a key part of our 2040 Transport Strategy vision for Greater Manchester to have:
“World-class connections that support long-term, sustainable economic growth and access to opportunity for all.”
The four key objectives of the vision are to:

Support economic growth

Protect our environment

Improve everyone's quality of life

Embrace new technology
Meeting the charging challenge
Demand for EV charging is growing and the EV industry is installing more and more charging points.
Today, there are more than 1,300 publicly available EV chargers in Greater Manchester with approximately 2,200 connectors.
Building on our 2021 EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy, the upcoming Greater Manchester Local Transport Plan will have more detail about our future ambitions.

What we’re doing
We want to help people and businesses switch to EV.
We’ve already installed 24 new Be.EV rapid chargers and 60 charging points for use by taxi and private hire drivers.
Greater Manchester also has £16m government funding to install many more low-powered, largely on-street public charging points across our city region.

Building a greener future
Greater Manchester is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2038.
That means going electric, with improved access to EV charging points and cleaner, greener transport.
We’re rolling out the Bee Network to make it much easier to get around by bus, tram, train, walking, wheeling or cycling.
So we can all get around in a way that protects our environment, improves our quality of life, and helps Greater Manchester keep growing.

Our trams run on renewable electricity and don’t produce any exhaust fumes.

We’re investing in electric zero emission buses as part of the Bee Network.

You can hire electric bikes as part of the Starling Bank Bikes hire scheme.
Cleaning up our air
We’re also cleaning up our air through the multi-million-pound investment-led Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan.
Funding has been awarded for investment in new low- and zero-emission buses and to support a cleaner, electric taxi fleet.
